Singles and doubles tournament will bring rising stars of the tennis world to the seaside resort’s acclaimed tennis center

Bethany Beach, DE, November 21, 2011 – Professional tennis returns to Bethany Beach for the second annual ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony, to be held June 10-17, 2012, on the clay courts at the Sea Colony Tennis Center, located south of Bethany Beach on West Way Drive, just west of Kent Avenue.

Again sponsored by ResortQuest® by Wyndham Vacation Rentals and the U. S. Tennis Association (USTA), the singles and doubles tournament will draw nationally and internationally ranked women tennis players seeking to improve their world rankings and claim their share of the $10,000 in prize money. Up to 64 women will compete for a spot in the tournament’s 32-player draw. Qualifying matches will be held June 10-11, with the main draw beginning on Tuesday, June 12. Doubles play also starts on June 12. Admission to the tournament is free.

“We are honored and excited to host the event again,” said Thomas Johnston, Sea Colony’s tennis director. “Feedback from USTA and tennis players was very positive and has increased Sea Colony’s reputation as an internationally recognized tennis destination.”

Sea Colony is ranked among Tennis magazine’s “Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the U.S.” – including No. 3 for the budget conscious. “Early June marks the start of the summer season at Sea Colony, and this tournament is certain to be a highlight of our 2012 season,” Johnston said.

The Ladies Pink Ribbon Tennis Tournament at the Beach is set to take place Friday, Sept. 30 and will be hosted and sponsored by Sea Colony - “The Premier Family Beach & Tennis Resort Community”.

Registration is scheduled for 8 a.m. (rain or shine) and costs $55 to play as well as recieve breakfast and lunch, Chinese Auction and 50/50 raffles. To also donate a gift basket to be auctioned at the Chinese Auction, the cost is $100.

Proceeds from the event will go to the American Cancer Society programs of breast cancer research, education, patient services and advocacy.

Bethany Beach, Del. –  Two noted tennis coaches are teaming up to offer a sport science clinic on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 2:30-5 p.m. at the Sea Colony Tennis Center in Bethany Beach, Del. 

Internationally-known sports psychologist, author and speaker Dr. Melissa Hunfalvay and Sea Colony Tennis Director Thomas Johnston will teach mental strategies and visual tactics designed to improve tennis players’ games.

The sport science clinic will cover:

• Performing better under stress
• Avoiding choking
• Anticipating ball direction and spin
• Becoming proactive and offensive-minded
• Staying calm in the thick of the match

“Melissa really gets what athletes experience,” Johnston said. “She has global experience as a tennis pro and player on the WTA Challenger circuit; as a coach for both men’s and women’s college tennis; and as a scientist in her dissertation researching the use of eye tracking technology to determine focus cues of elite tennis players.”  

Dr. Hunfalvay formed the Institute of Sport Science for Tennis in Washington, D.C., (www.iSportScience.com) to use sport science research and cutting edge technology to develop on- and off-court resources that tennis coaches can use to elevate their student’s games and help tennis players learn to be the best they can be.

Combining classroom and on-court instruction, the sport science clinic will be team-taught with Johnston, who earned national recognition as a successful and innovative tennis coach at the University of Virginia.  Under his leadership, the UVA tennis team’s NCAA national ranking improved from No. 95 to No. 15, opening the door for several of Johnston’s collegiate players to achieve world rankings.

Grand Slam Champion Richey Reneberg shares his pro tennis experiences in the Sea Colony Tennis Center

Grand Slam Champion Richey Reneberg shared strategy, advice and great personal stories from professional tennis last week at the Sea Colony Tennis Center.

Reneberg reached a career high world ranking of No. 20 in singles and No. 1 in doubles. In addition, Richey represented the United States at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and played on several American Davis Cup teams.

Those in attendance were also treated to a pro exhibition match, which came down to a 7-7 tie breaker.

Lena Litvak won her first career singles title at the ResortQuest Pro Women's Open at Sea Colony

BETHANY BEACH, Del. – Lena Litvak registered her first ever singles title by winning the inaugural ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony on Sunday. Litvak (USA), as the tourney’s No. 2 seed, took down No. 1 seed Maria-Fernanda Alves 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-3 to claim the crown.

It was Litvak’s second championship of the weekend, as the Bronx, N.Y. native also won the event’s first-ever doubles title with her partner Alexandra Hirsch (USA) Saturday by defeating Alves and Angelina Gabueva of Russia.

BETHANY BEACH, Del. — Champions were crowned at the ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony on Saturday as No. 2 seed Alexandra Hirsch and Lena Litvak of the U.S. defeated No. 1 Maria Fernanda Alves (Brazil) and Angelina Gabueva (Russia) to win the inaugural doubles title.

Hrisch and Litvak overcame a 5-1 deficit in the final tie-break set to win the match 7-5, 3-6 (10-8).

Earlier in the day, Alves and Litvak each advanced to the singles final, which is set for tomorrow at 11 a.m. Alves, the tourney’s No. 1 seed advanced by beating her doubles partner Gabueva in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. She will meet Litvak, the second seed who also won in straight sets, defeating unseeded American Denise Starr (Boca Raton, Fla.) 6-1, 6-0.

Sea Colony, Bethany Beach, Delaware – Friday, June 17, 2011 – The top three seeds advanced to the semifinals of the ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony singles tournament, while the top two seeded doubles teams moved on to the finals.

No. 1 seed Maria-Fernanda Alves, of Brazil, and No. 3 seed Angelina Gabueva, of Russia, each rallied from first set losses to advance to meet each other in Saturday’s first semifinal match. Alves beat No. 8 Kyle McPhillips (USA), 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-1, while Gabueva downed No. 6 Chanelle Van Nguyen (USA), 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. Second-seeded Lena Litvak (USA) will meet fellow American Denise Starr in tomorrow’s second semifinal match-up.
 
In doubles action, the top-seeded team Alves and Gabueva earned their spot in the finals by defeating Americans Kelsey Laurente and Nicole Robinson 6-2, 6-0. They will meet the second-seeded tandem of Alexandra Hirsch (USA) and Litvak, who advanced to the finals after beating the fourth-seeded team of Van Nguyen and McPhillips 7-5, 6-2.

Play resumes Saturday at 9 a.m., with the singles semifinals followed by the doubles final.
