Delaware beach and tennis resort community also among Tennis Magazine’s 2012 Top 50 American Resorts – including #3 in the Mid-Atlantic

Sea Colony, Bethany Beach, Delaware – May 1, 2012 – Located just south of Bethany Beach, Delaware, Sea Colony – known as “The Premier Family Beach & Tennis Resort Community” – remains among the world’s elite tennis camps, according to Tennis Resorts Online’s 2012 rankings released today.

TennisResortsOnline.com (TRO), published by former Tennis Magazine editor Roger Cox, ranked the seaside resort the world’s No. 13 tennis camp, as well as No. 4 for best overall children’s programs and No. 5 for best junior programs. The southern Delaware beach and tennis community is also among TRO’s top 50 tennis resorts.

The annual rankings, now in their 13th year, are determined by tennis players, who were asked to evaluate resorts and camps in more than 20 categories, from the quality of the tennis programs to lodging and restaurants to value. This recent global recognition adds to the decades of local, regional and national honors earned by the resort community and its tennis staff.

With 34 tennis courts, including four indoor and 14 Har-Tru clay, Sea Colony Tennis, under Tennis Director Thomas Johnston, offers a wide range of camps, clinics and private instruction to tennis players of all ages and skill levels.

Supported by the Sea Colony homeowners, the tennis program has produced state and national champions, elite juniors and top collegiate tennis players, while earning kudos from state and regional tennis organizations.

Earlier this year, Tennis Magazine honored the resort community among its 2012 Top 50 American Resorts, as well as ranking Sea Colony the No. 3 resort in the Mid-Atlantic region.

In addition to its world-class tennis offerings, Sea Colony, which is professionally managed by ResortQuest Delaware, features a wide variety of amenities including a half mile of private beach, 12 pools (two indoor), fitness centers, activities for all ages, community shuttle, year-round security and wireless Internet access.

BETHANY BEACH — Bethany Beach resident Frank Petti says he looks forward to many changes the end of summer brings.

“The weather is better for seniors and the water temperature is the best this time of year,” he said.

Petti says he’s looking forward to less traffic, fewer crowds and the meters being deactivated.

Visitors to beaches from Ocean City to Lewes can expect changes in parking, pets and crowds. For some beaches, they take place soon; for others, the busy season is still here.

“Labor Day does not mean the town has shut down,” said Ocean City spokesperson Donna Abbott. Beach Patrol will be present on Ocean City beaches through Sept. 25.

“We still have a busy month ahead of us,” Abbott said.

Upcoming events include Bike Week and Sunfest, among others. Abbott said roaming beach patrol will take over once the permanent beach patrol ends.

Parking meters and the ban on pets are still in effect for Ocean City beaches, Abbott said.

Dewey Beach is allowing pets on a day-by-day basis, says Beach Patrol Captain Todd Fritchman. He said visitors should check with the lifeguards before bringing their pets to Dewey. Beach Patrol ended Sept. 11, when visitors swim at their own risk.

Fenwick Island’s website says pets are allowed beginning Oct. 1 and parking permits are required in the city limits through Sept. 15.

Part-time Bethany Beach resident Lynn Skynear said she thinks it’s fine to take pets on the beach.

“(But) large dogs should be on a leash,” Skynear said, adding such practice would keep smaller dogs safe.

Gigi Vandermann, a full-time Bethany Beach resident, says allowing pets only in the winter would be preferable.

“I think pets should be kept off the beach (until winter),” she said.

Rehoboth City Manager Greg Ferrese said the beach patrol is on duty through Sept. 25. Ferrese said pets are allowed on the beach Oct. 1.

“Our meters are in effect through midnight Sept. 18,” Ferrese said.

All pets visiting the beach must be licensed, leashed and vaccinated.

Ocean City

Pets: Oct. 1

Beach patrol’s last day: Sept. 25

Paid parking for metered lots and street areas ends Oct. 15

Pets: Oct. 1; all must be licensed, vaccinated and leashed

Beach patrol’s last day: Sept. 18

Bethany Beach

Pets: Beach rules involving pets are enforced by the Beach Patrol during lifeguard hours.

Beach patrol’s last day: Sept. 25

Parking meters come down Sept. 15

Dewey Beach

Pets: Owners should call the beach patrol before arriving with their pets

A project to remove pollutants from storm water before it flows into Little Assawoman Bay is underway near Sea Colony.

The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, working with Sea Colony and the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is retrofitting the existing drainage ditch along South Pennsylvania Ave. to remove pollution in stormwater runoff before it enters a storm drain system that discharges to the Anchorage Canal.

This project is one of many storm water retrofit recommendations identified in a recent assessment of the area led by the non-profit, Center for Watershed Protection, and engineering firm, JMT.

“Part of the assessment project was to identify and prioritize projects that would meet the pollution reduction goal in the area,” said Chris Bason, of the Center for the Inland Bays.

He said they identified 25 different projects within the drainage area and sought to get the most “bang for their buck,” by picking projects that cost the least and remove the most nitrogen and phosphorus.

“This project was close to the top of the list,” he said.

It is also the first one to be implemented.

“The idea is to go in and get storm water quantity and quality controls where there were none or they could be enhanced.”

Bason said engineering firm JMT recommended expanding and reconfiguring the ditch that receives runoff from the high rises at Sea Colony to bio-retention areas, with the idea of trapping and holding the runoff longer, which helps to filter out the pollutants. The end result increases the area of wetlands which help to trap pollution and converts the area into a wet swail area.

Part of the project also includes a series of innovative infiltration pits to direct runoff from the Sea Colony parking lot into the ground where it is filtered before entering the ditch. According to the Center for the Inland Bays, a typical 10-acre surface parking lot will create more than a quarter of a million gallons of storm water after a one-inch rain storm. The project also includes installing filter strips to trap anything running off the highway. .

“Sea Colony saw this as an opportunity to not only do their part to treat runoff, but also as an investment in the beautification of their property,” said Bason. He also said Sposato Landscape will install plantings into a rich compost mix which should provide all the nutrition that the new plantings will need without using chemical fertilizers.

Bason said the work goes toward the goal of the Pollution Control Strategy, which encompasses many voluntary actions that can be taken to help clean up 4500 acres of these types of areas. When completed, in early May, the project will treat runoff from 35 acres, removing excess nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as bacteria and oils from the water before it reaches the bay.

Sue Barton of the University of Delaware designed the planting scheme for the project, which will include native wild flowers, shrubs, and trees to help slow the water entering the system and process toxins and nutrients.

Planning is also underway with Middlesex Beach and the Town of South Bethany to install a series of bio-retention and infiltration areas in the Coastal Highway-Route 1 median. They plan on using Barton again for the native plantings to help with continuity of the projects.

The project was designed by JMT, and is being implemented by David A. Bramble Inc.

The project is funded by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources Community Watershed Improvement Grant Program, Sea Colony, and the Center for the Inland Bays.
