The fifth annual Sea Colony Le Tour de Cure, an indoor cycling event which benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Freeman Fitness Center within the Sea Colony tennis resort community from 7 a.m. to noon.

Over the last four years, thousands of dollars have been raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation Triathlon will return to Sea Colony near Bethany Beach this weekend, on Saturday, Sept. 24. The triathlon event boasts a 1.5K swim, 41K bike ride and 10K run, and for the first time, hosts an AquaVelo option, which includes just the cycling and swimming legs of the race, for athletes who prefer not to run.

Designed for everyone from the weekend warriors to seasoned triathletes, Saturday’s event is open to anyone 14 or older, with a maximum participation of 1,000 people.

Now in its 28th year, participants will take to the road and water as individuals or part of a relay team. All proceeds and pledges from the event will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic, which serves Delaware, Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. The mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation is centered around granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

A few wishes granted to children in the Mid-Atlantic region have included becoming a superhero, traveling to Hawaii, enjoying a shopping spree and meeting a favorite athlete. Recently, a 9-year-old Dover girl named Katrina had her wish fulfilled when she and her family enjoyed a stay at Walt Disney World in Florida. The average cost of a wish in the Mid-Atlantic region is estimated at $7,500.

Registration fees are $150 per individuals for the full triathlon or AquaVelo, and $150 per member of a relay team. A pre-race meeting will take place in the transition area on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Sea Colony near Bethany Beach, with the race beginning promptly at 7:30 a.m. Post-race festivities, including an award ceremony, will take place at noon.

Bethany Beach, Del. –  Two noted tennis coaches are teaming up to offer a sport science clinic on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 2:30-5 p.m. at the Sea Colony Tennis Center in Bethany Beach, Del. 

Internationally-known sports psychologist, author and speaker Dr. Melissa Hunfalvay and Sea Colony Tennis Director Thomas Johnston will teach mental strategies and visual tactics designed to improve tennis players’ games.

The sport science clinic will cover:

• Performing better under stress
• Avoiding choking
• Anticipating ball direction and spin
• Becoming proactive and offensive-minded
• Staying calm in the thick of the match

“Melissa really gets what athletes experience,” Johnston said. “She has global experience as a tennis pro and player on the WTA Challenger circuit; as a coach for both men’s and women’s college tennis; and as a scientist in her dissertation researching the use of eye tracking technology to determine focus cues of elite tennis players.”  

Dr. Hunfalvay formed the Institute of Sport Science for Tennis in Washington, D.C., (www.iSportScience.com) to use sport science research and cutting edge technology to develop on- and off-court resources that tennis coaches can use to elevate their student’s games and help tennis players learn to be the best they can be.

Combining classroom and on-court instruction, the sport science clinic will be team-taught with Johnston, who earned national recognition as a successful and innovative tennis coach at the University of Virginia.  Under his leadership, the UVA tennis team’s NCAA national ranking improved from No. 95 to No. 15, opening the door for several of Johnston’s collegiate players to achieve world rankings.

In the chilly Atlantic surf east of the Bethany Beach bandstand late Monday afternoon, a group of 23 medical students completed a 3,700-mile journey that began 51 days ago in San Diego, Calif.

Ride for World Health is a national, nonprofit organization which advocates for improvements in the quality and accessibility of global healthcare. Each year, the group uses this cross-country bike ride as a vehicle of communication, R4WH addresses this issue through political advocacy, fundraising and its unique Coast-to-Coast Lecture Series.

They were our guests last night – as they were at the end of their trip last year. Four ResortQuest rental homeowners graciously donated their Sea Colony vacation rental units on the oceanfront to house these weary travelers – in cozy beds, as opposed to a gymnasium or a van, for one of the few times during their long trip.

Congratulations to these young people who put their feet where their mouths are – a bike ride from sea to shining sea is certainly a special kind of commitment.
